Escultor estadounidense. Aprendió metalurgia cuando trabajaba en una planta automotriz. En 1926 se trasladó a Nueva York y tomó varios empleos mientras estudiaba pintura en la Art Students League. Sus esculturas surgieron de sus pinturas abstractas, a las que adhirió tal cantidad de trocitos de madera, metal y objetos encontrados, que se convirtieron en verdaderas bases para superestructuras escultóricas. Fue el primer artista estadounidense en hacer esculturas con metal soldado. En 1940 se dirigió a Bolton Landing, N.Y., donde hizo aquí sus grandes, y aparentemente ingrávidas esculturas metálicas en las cuales trabajó hasta su muerte ocurrida en un accidente automovilístico. Sus formas abstractas biomorfas y geométricas, destacan por su errática inventiva, su diversidad estilística y su gran calidad estética. Su obra ejerció fuerte influencia sobre la escultura minimalista (ver minimalismo) de la década de 1960.
